Christopher Spencer designed the Spencer repeating rifles and carbines, which were early American lever-action weaponry. The Spencer Repeating Weapon Co. and the Burnside Rifle Co. manufactured nearly 200,000 units in the United States between 1860 and 1869, making it the world's first wartime metallic-cartridge repeating rifle.
