In 1954, Joseph A. Kuhn, Sr., developed the multiple-break chronometer that allowed controlled breaks or sequences with a programme wheel. The wheel allowed breaks every second and on the 59th second, would identify a new minute. Astronomical field observers could then record with the chronometer any star transits. The timekeeping system is used to find local celestial objects. By using the sidereal time, astronomers can point their telescopes to accurate coordinates in the night sky by measuring the time based on the Earth’s rotation rate relative to fixed stars.
