Curt Herzstark created the Curta, a compact mechanical calculator. It's famous for its small size: a cylinder that fits snugly in the palm of your hand. Because of its design and function, it was popularly known as the pepper grinder or peppermill. Curtas paved the way for modern electronic calculators as the greatest portable devices available until the 1970s.
