Near the end of 1900, Archibald Bannatyne created a mechanism for winding and setting pocket watches. He attached the winding and setting spindle to the crown/cap of the watch which can be rotated manually. This in turn rotates multiple gears in the watch itself and can be used to set the time. The analog watches of the modern world use a similar type of mechanism to change and set time on the watches.
